When you take your bird in for it's first vet visit, here are a few recommended tests. Your vet may advise you of additional recommended tests, but this is the minimum that all new birds in our house receive on their first visit. The costs that are listed are for my area (Alabama) and may not be accurate for all vets in all areas of the country.

Chlamydia/Psittacosis testing $55
Psittacosis can be transmitted to humans and can infect birds of all species and ages.

Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease & Polyoma testing $80
PBFD is an often incurable and fatal disease that is easily transmitted to other birds. Polyoma is a disease that is easily transmitted to other birds and most commonly fatal to juveniles, but all ages can be susceptible.

Avian Comprehensive Panel $100
This panel includes a CBC and other basic information that helps your vet accurately determine your bird's health.

Avian Bile Acids (price is in addition to the Comprehensive) $35
This panel when combined with the Comprehensive Panel gives your vet a starting point when looking for decreased liver and kidney function and is also often used to monitor a bird that is on medication that can have an adverse impact on the kidneys/liver.

Office Visit (price depends on weight of bird) $35-75
Sometimes includes Gram Stains, Wing, Beak and Nail trims this is an over all physical assessment of your bird and should include a visual inspection of eyes, nares, feet, feather condition and a check for lumps or masses. A good vet will also explain proper diet, caging requirements, basic species traits and behaviors to expect during your first visit.
